From Barcode to Electronic Code - 2004
The From Barcode to Electronic Code report evaluates the readiness of the Australasian market to embrace the Electronic Product Code (EPC) network.
What emerges is a picture of a region where many companies have moved beyond a “wait and see” approach to a “watch and learn” phase which is a preliminary to implementation.
While the Northern hemisphere is much closer to implementing RFID enabled EPC, largely due to mandates from retailers such as Wal*Mart and Tesco, Australasian companies have been watching developments closely and is some cases have already conducted their own trials.
Two companies, Amcor and Visy, have completed initial RFID/EPC trials, while three other companies reported they have commenced but not completed trials.
In June, retailer Coles Myer announced a two-month trial to track RFID–equipped roll cages between a distribution centre in Melbourne’s Hampton Park, and a supermarket in nearby Glenferrie.
Other necessary steps, as detailed in the report, such as the development of regional standards and a code of privacy are being addressed as part of industry wide implementation plans.
These developments, and survey the results, show that Australasia is viewing the current period as a window of opportunity where it can monitor EPC developments in the northern hemisphere, and companies can talk to their suppliers and customers in a collaborative way. They can use this window to develop a business case so they can optimise their implementations when the time comes.
